Damian Warner Wins Fourth Hypo Meeting Title, Nafissatou Thiam Defends Her 2017 TitleBy Adam Kopet Damian Warner of Canada and Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium won Hypo Meeting titles in Gotzis, Austria, Sunday, setting world leading marks in the process. The Hypo Meeting is part of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge. Warner won his fourth decathlon in Gotzis, equaling the number of wins by multi-event greats Carolina Kluft, Roman Sebrle and Sabine Braun. He finished with a score of 8,795 points, breaking his own Canadian record. Maicel Uibo of Estonia finished second with 8,514 points and Pieter Braun of the Netherlands finished third with 8,342 points. American Zach Ziemek finished 10th with 8,124 points. Thiam successfully defended her heptathlon title, winning with 6,806 points. Thiam had been on pace to challenge the European record until the penultimate event, the javelin, where poor wind conditions resulted in a best throw 40 feet less than her best mark last year. Yorgelis Rodriguez of Cuba finished second with 6,742 points and American Erica Bougard finished third with 6,725 points. Bougard smashed her personal best and moved up to fourth on the U.S. all-time performer list. |
